May 16, 2010 | Newsletter First Quarter
First quarter of this year was subdued in terms of deal activity with only 1 transaction closed – the lowest quarterly tally since 2005. Europe was clouded with uncertainty in April in several respects. While the Icelandic volcanic ash cloud hampered travel and disrupted business for much of Western Europe, the de-rating of Greece’s sovereign bonds by S&P (from BBB-plus to BB-plus or junk status, the first time this has happened to a country in the Eurozone) followed by Portugal (cut two notches to A-minus) and Spain (down one notch to AA-minus) sent the Euro reeling to a one-year low against the dollar. Much of the European Union was consumed with bailing out Greece while ensuring a speedy reform process to address the deficits in the PIGS countries (Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain).
